Art Basel Miami Beach opens to the public on Friday 4 December and runs to Sunday 6 December, inside the Miami Beach Convention Center at 1901 Convention Center Drive. VIP days come first, Wednesday 2 December from 4pm and then Thursday 3 December. Six weeks out, the hotels a short walk from the hall are still selling rooms for that weekend, and six of the seven we checked would sell you the Friday by itself.

Fifteen minutes, measured on the street

Lennox Miami Beach at 1900 Collins Avenue is 0.22 miles from the Convention Center in a straight line and 0.53 miles by the route you would actually walk, about 11 minutes on foot. We routed every walk on this page along the streets with OpenStreetMap's foot routing on 19 October, and the times are those routes.

On a map the Shelborne at 1801 Collins and the Gale at 1690 are the same distance from the hall, about 0.3 miles, but on foot the Gale is about 11 minutes and the Shelborne about 14. Every hotel we cover within 15 minutes is in South Beach, between 16th and 24th Streets. The shortest walk is from the Plymouth on 21st Street, about 8 minutes. Esmé on Washington Avenue misses the cut by a minute at about 16, and the nearest hotel we cover in Mid-Beach is about 23.

Every route ends at the street address. The fair's own pages gave no daily opening hours and didn't say which door the public uses when we read them. It is a big building, so leave a few minutes for walking along it to your entrance.

Friday the 4th on its own

On 19 October we put a one-night stay for 4 December into seven of these hotels' own booking screens. Gale South Beach, about 11 minutes on foot, was the one that refused. Hilton's screen answered a Friday-only search with "Sorry, we don't have any rooms available for those dates," then found 9 rooms for Friday and Saturday together and 8 for Thursday to Sunday. Hilton says its quoted price includes the $40 nightly resort fee, though not the tax on it. Valet is $46, a figure Hilton prints with no per-night label and nothing on tax, and leaving a night early costs $400.

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach at 1 Lincoln Road, about 14 minutes, listed rooms for the Friday alone and for 3 to 6 December, which takes in VIP Thursday. Enter the dates and a mandatory $70 nightly resort fee appears that the property page doesn't show beforehand. Parking is valet only, also $70 a day.

The Loews at 1601 Collins sold both stays too. At about 15 minutes it is the longest walk of the seven, and it finished a $55 million room and dining renovation in time for last year's art week. A $50 nightly resort fee plus tax goes on every night. Valet is $60 a night including tax, and the public garage across the street is $20 a day, though the hotel publishes no overnight self-park rate.

Across Collins at 1600, Hyatt Centric South Beach sold the Friday, about 14 minutes away, with a $40 nightly fee plus tax. Hyatt lists valet at $45 a night without saying whether that is before tax, and points drivers to city garages. The one on 16th Street charges up to $20 a day, with a $15 flat rate per vehicle from 8pm to 5am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Sagamore at 1671 Collins and the National next door at 1677 both sold one night, and both are about 13 minutes on foot. The Sagamore adds a $49 nightly resort fee plus tax; its valet is $27 before taxes for the first 4 hours and $47 excluding taxes after that. The National charges a resort fee every day without publishing the amount, and guests report about $19 to $28.50. Valet there is $47 a night, or you hunt for a space on the street.

The Kimpton Surfcomber at 1717 Collins, about 14 minutes, sold the Friday on IHG's screen. Its cars go to a garage 0.1 miles west at 17th Street and James Avenue, at $52 a night plus tax, on top of a $49 nightly fee plus tax.

Fees where we couldn't see the Friday

The Plymouth's site blocked the browser we read it with, and the Lennox and the Setai had no booking link on their homepages that we could find, so we don't know what the Friday looks like at three of the closest hotels. 1 Hotel had no link either. We didn't try the Catalina or the Shelborne.

The Plymouth, about 8 minutes on foot, charges what it calls a Hotel Service Fee, $45 a room each night plus tax. It is the one hotel here that publishes no valet: you self-park in a covered lot nearby for $45 per day plus tax, so a car doubles what you pay on top of the room. The Lennox, about 11 minutes, calls its fee a daily amenity fee, $45 a night plus taxes or $51.30 all in. Its valet is $49 a night plus tax and there is no self-parking.

The Setai at 2001 Collins, about 12 minutes, has no traditional resort fee by its own FAQ. Its valet is $60 a night. The Catalina at 1732 Collins is about 13 minutes. Its $30 nightly fee comes to $34.20 with the 14% tax, and the valet, run by a third party, is $40 a day plus taxes. The Shelborne by Proper, about 14 minutes, charges $75 per day, mandatory, and its valet is $55 a night plus tax.

1 Hotel South Beach at 2341 Collins is the farthest north of these, also about 14 minutes. Its fee is $66 a night per room plus tax, or $95 in Retreat Collection rooms. Valet is $65 per vehicle plus tax, and 1 Hotels says that price can change on high-impact dates and citywide events, so expect a different quote for Art Basel week.
