Last-Minute Hotel Deals in Garden District and Uptown

Five of these seven hotels sit on St. Charles Avenue and the other two a block off it on Prytania Street, which puts every one of them inside a block of a streetcar stop. Parking is where they stop resembling each other. One charges $55 a night for valet, another has no lot at all and points you at free street parking.

What the streetcar corridor costs, week by week

Thursday through Saturday is when this corridor fills. Commander's Palace and the Magazine Street restaurant row run a dinner crush across those nights, and the jazz brunch trade pulls the same people back on Sunday morning. Tulane's home dates at Yulman Stadium add families to the smaller properties on St. Charles. Five are left in 2026, from Southern Miss on September 26 to North Texas on November 21, and one of them, Memphis on October 16, is a Friday night. Monday through Wednesday is where the rate falls, because hardly anyone here is traveling for work. The convention center and the office towers are downtown, so this area lives on tourists. Carnival breaks that: in the final stretch a parade rolls St. Charles on the weeknights too.

Carnival starts on a fixed date and ends on a moving one. On Twelfth Night, January 6, the Phunny Phorty Phellows board a streetcar at the Willow Street barn and ride St. Charles Avenue down to Harmony Circle, and from there the season builds to Mardi Gras Day, February 9 in 2027. The Sugar Bowl fills the Superdome on January 15 as a playoff semifinal. French Quarter Fest runs April 8 to 11, and Jazz Fest takes the two weekends behind it, April 22 to 25 and April 29 to May 2. Essence Festival has July 2 to 5. Then the heat arrives, and late August into September is the cheapest run of nights in the year, storm risk included. Early December is the other quiet stretch.

The Pontchartrain is valet only at $55 plus tax a night, and Hotel Tonnelle is $53 with no self-park option published. The Hampton Inn on St. Charles self-parks at $20 a day, though that goes to $50 a night over Mardi Gras. The Garden District Hotel has no lot and no valet, and points guests at free street parking. Carnival takes that away. The city bans parking on both sides of St. Charles between Napoleon Avenue and Canal Street for two hours before and after every parade. About 2,500 temporary signs go up, and anything still there is ticketed and towed. Only The Pontchartrain names a nightly fee, a daily Destination Amenity Fee it never attaches an amount to. The streetcar is $1.25 a ride or $3 for a day, and RTA ran buses instead for the last six days of Carnival in 2026.

Garden District and Uptown deal questions

Which weeks should I not try to book last minute here?

Carnival's last week and both Jazz Fest weekends. Mardi Gras Day is February 9 in 2027, and the parades in the ten days before it come down St. Charles through this area. Jazz Fest takes April 22 to 25 and April 29 to May 2. Essence Festival, July 2 to 5, does the same thing citywide in the middle of the soft season.

How much is parking at a Garden District or Uptown hotel?

It depends on the hotel, and the spread is wide. The Hampton Inn on St. Charles self-parks at $20 a day. Valet is $53 at Hotel Tonnelle and $55 plus tax at The Pontchartrain, and neither publishes a self-park rate. The Garden District Hotel and the Henry Howard have no lot and no valet, so you park on the street. That street parking is free outside the Garden District Hotel; the Henry Howard does not say whether its block is free or metered.

Can I park on St. Charles Avenue during Mardi Gras?

No. The city bans parking on both sides of the avenue between Napoleon Avenue and Canal Street from two hours before each parade until two hours after it ends. About 2,500 temporary no-parking signs go up for the season, and cars left there are ticketed and towed.

Does the St. Charles streetcar run during Carnival?

Not for the last several days of it. In 2026 RTA suspended the St. Charles and Canal lines from Thursday February 12 through Mardi Gras Day, ran a 24-hour bus bridge instead and restored normal service the Wednesday after. RTA publishes each year's Carnival plan in January, so check it before you count on the line. The rest of the year a ride is $1.25, or $3 for a day on a Jazzy Pass.

Can I get here from the airport without a car?

Yes, on RTA's 202 Airport Express for $1.25. It runs from the airport terminals to Elk Place at Canal Street and the Union Passenger Terminal, and you change there to the St. Charles streetcar. It is not a frequent bus, so read RTA's timetable against your flight rather than turning up.

What can I walk to from a hotel on St. Charles Avenue?

Magazine Street's shops and restaurants, a few blocks toward the river from most of these hotels. Audubon Park and Audubon Zoo sit at the Uptown end, with the Tulane and Loyola campuses across the avenue from the park. Commander's Palace and the Garden District's mansion blocks are at the downtown end. The French Quarter is not one of them: it is about two miles off, which is what the streetcar is for.
