Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Hot Tin, the rooftop bar with its view back over the city, is the main reason people book The Pontchartrain. The hotel sits on the St. Charles streetcar line in the Garden District, and guests who want to stay outside the Quarter like the address and the old-hotel feel. Rooms get called spacious, bathrooms especially, but reviews through 2026 mention stained or torn carpet and dated fixtures, and some guests describe a musty smell. The room you sleep in is more worn than the bar upstairs suggests. Service depends on who is working: some guests name a staff member who went well out of their way, and others describe being brushed off at the front desk or at the rooftop bar. A new general manager has acknowledged both complaints in replies to reviews, though no fix is confirmed. Book it if your evenings end on the roof and an older room won't bother you. There is no self-parking. Valet is $55 plus tax a night with 24-hour in-and-out access and no EV charging. A daily Destination Amenity Fee covers Wi-Fi and access to Franco's gym on Magazine Street, and the hotel's own site does not publish the amount, so ask for it when you book.

Does The Pontchartrain Hotel charge a resort fee?
Yes, a daily Destination Amenity Fee, but the hotel doesn't publish the amount on its own site. It covers in-room coffee, Wi-Fi, local calls, bottled water at check-in and daily access to Franco's gym on Magazine Street. Ask for the figure when you book.
How much is parking at The Pontchartrain?
$55 plus tax per night, and valet is the only option. You get in-and-out access 24 hours a day, but the valet garage has no EV charging.
What time is check-in, and can I get in early?
Check-in is 4 pm and check-out is 11 am. Early check-in is first-come and depends on occupancy, so it isn't guaranteed, but the hotel will hold your bags for free before check-in and after check-out.
Is The Pontchartrain pet friendly?
Yes. Up to two pets per room, with a $75 cleaning fee charged at check-in.
Can I walk to the French Quarter from The Pontchartrain?
It's a long walk. Most guests take the St. Charles streetcar, which stops by the hotel and runs downtown toward Canal Street at the edge of the Quarter.
Is The Pontchartrain worth it for a last-minute stay?
Yes, if you want the Garden District and plan to spend your evenings at Hot Tin. Guests in 2026 keep reporting worn carpet and dated fixtures, and service is uneven, so look elsewhere if you want a polished room.
