Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The Henry Howard is an 1867 Garden District townhouse with 18 rooms, run more like an inn than a hotel. The staff get credit for neighborhood tips and for carrying bags up the stairs. That help matters, because the building has a lot of stairs and the hotel asks guests with limited mobility to call ahead. Rooms are described as very clean with comfortable beds. In-room extras are thin: no mini fridge and no coffee maker, with coffee and pastries set out in the parlor each morning instead. Room size varies a lot. The King Balcony rooms have 12-foot windows and a walk-out balcony, while the Queen Efficiency is the hotel's own label for its smaller economy room, and guests who paid festival-weekend prices were the ones most likely to feel shortchanged. Ask which room you're getting before paying a peak rate. The service is what brings people back, and most of them are happy to ride the St. Charles streetcar into the Quarter and return to a quiet residential street at night. There is no lot and no valet, only street parking, and the hotel doesn't say whether that parking is free or metered. A third adult in the room adds $25 a night. The hotel lists no resort fee, though it never states that none is charged.

Open in Maps →The hotel sits on Prytania Street at the lower end of the Garden District, half a block from St. Charles Avenue, where the streetcar runs downtown toward the French Quarter. The blocks around it are residential and quiet, and Magazine Street's shops and restaurants are an easy walk the other way. Its balcony patio faces the St. Charles parade route, so Mardi Gras parades roll past close by.
