Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Bar Madonna, on the property, is a bar anyone can walk into. It serves light bites with no full restaurant behind it, and the inn's homepage lists it closing at 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 on Friday and Saturday. The nine rooms are split between a house built in 1910 in historic Avondale East and the inn's Carriage House and Cottage. Breakfast is included and French in style, quiche and pastries with yogurt and fruit, 8 to 10 a.m. in the Main House. The FAQ says families are welcome, yet the booking screen lists a maximum of zero children for every room, so ask before you book with a child. Dogs stay only in the Carriage House and Cottage rooms, at $150 per stay, non-refundable. For 17 November the reservation summary added Houston's 17 percent hotel tax and no fee line. Parking is free, in a gated lot with one space per room, and Midtown Park is ten minutes away on foot.
