Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

With 259 rooms, The Whitehall Houston is more than three times the size of any other hotel here, and it has an outdoor pool open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and a 24-hour gym. The FAQ says "Valet only, no self-parking available," at $59 overnight, or $30 per event visit if you aren't staying, and it doesn't say whether tax is added. The booking screen for 17 November, read on 28 October, showed no fee. It itemized four tax lines instead: 6 percent state, 7 percent city, 2 percent county and 2 percent Sports Authority, 17 percent in all. Driving puts $59 a night on top of the rate and the 17 percent, or $177 over three nights. Valet is complimentary in the Park & Stay and AAA Park N Play offers. The recurring complaints are older rooms and a valet that is sometimes unavailable, which stings more when valet is the only way to park. Midtown Park is a 20-minute walk. Checkout is noon, and a departure after 2 p.m. costs one night's room and tax.
