Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
La Colombe d'Or started in 1923 as a private house for the founder of Humble Oil, and the Zimmermans turned it into a hotel in 1979. It now has 32 suites. Five are in the Mansion and 18 in the Tower, and the nine Garden Bungalows run from 840 to 1,540 square feet, each with a full kitchen and a private patio, a balcony or access to an interior courtyard. A pool sits on the Tower's 10th floor with an outdoor bar nearby, and more than 425 works of art are shown on guided tours. The walk to Midtown Park is 23 minutes. The hotel's site gives no parking rate, but its booking engine sold valet as a $54 add-on before tax on a one-night search. Overnight valet comes with the Toi et Moi package, and Sips and Bites includes overnight parking for one vehicle. The $60 Book Direct daily credit can also go toward it. The Mews booking screen's summary for 18 November added hotel taxes totaling 17 percent and no fee line. For 17 November the only room it offered online was a 25th-floor suite marked "CALL THE HOTEL for reservations."
