Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Eight rooms sit above the Star Cafe in a building from about 1910, and seven of them use bathrooms down the hall, with iron tubs and pull-chain toilets. Miss Josie's Room has the only private bath. Every room has shutters, lace curtains, iron beds, antique quilts and oak furniture, and none has a phone or a television. Guest comments the hotel chose for its own home page praise the antique rooms and the Star Cafe downstairs, steak and chips in particular. The hotel's own terms warn that hotels on West Exchange can experience street and bar noise, and the walk to Cowtown Coliseum is 4 minutes, 331 meters. The booking cart for 19 November added taxes of 17 percent and no fee line. The calendar showed no vacancy for 17 November. The terms do state a $35 per room charge if keys aren't returned and non-refundable deposits on certain dates. They also say 20% of the reservation total may be charged to cancel certain reservations, and that cancellations must reach the hotel 7 days before the reservation date or the full amount is charged. A last-minute booking is already inside that window. There is no designated parking: a pay lot behind the buildings next door, with no price given, or free curb spaces outside restricted zones. Check-in is 3 to 8 p.m. only.
