Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The Higgins is the official hotel of the National WWII Museum and sits on the museum's campus, 226 feet from it by the hotel's own count. If the museum is why you're in New Orleans, nothing else puts you closer, and guests like the 1940s theme. The 230 rooms carry era-inspired artwork and the lobby bar is named for Kilroy. Rooms get called spacious and clean. The front desk and concierge come up again and again as friendly and quick to help. When breakfast is part of your rate (the hotel sells a museum package that includes it), the beignets and pastries are what people remember. Rosie's on the Roof takes no reservations, so go near opening if you want a skyline seat. The goodwill stops at the menu: guests repeatedly call the on-site dining and room service expensive for what arrives. No resort fee is published on the hotel's site; confirm the total on the booking screen anyway. There's no valet. You self-park in the museum garage just past the hotel entrance at $45 a day plus tax. For dinner, walk out the door instead: the hotel counts 11 restaurants within two blocks, Cochon and Pêche among them.
