Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The Ritz-Carlton's address is Water Tower Place, so the mall is on the doorstep and the Water Tower is three minutes away on foot, with a Red Line subway stop nearby. Marriott's booking screen added nothing but room tax to its rates. Guests single out the beds, along with the lake and skyline views from the upper floors. Service responsiveness disappoints some guests, and the bathrooms are older, with the toilet not in a separate room. Parking costs $85 a day whether you valet or park yourself. Self-parking saves nothing. The self-park hourly rate is $34, charged on every entry or exit. Three nights come to $255, and the hotel's page doesn't say whether tax is included. Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is noon. You must be 21 to check in. Two pets per room are allowed at up to 25 pounds each, for $250 a stay, non-refundable and paid at check-in.
