Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

You get two rooms in every suite at the Embassy Suites, and the free made-to-order breakfast, which reviews call the most consistent plus, takes a meal off a family's bill each morning. There is a free evening reception too, and guests praise the staff. At 511 North Columbus Drive the hotel is 13 minutes on foot from the Water Tower, a few blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Guests describe the walk to Michigan Avenue and State Street as short, and put the Grand Red Line station about 8 minutes away on foot. Cleanliness is the most frequent complaint, in rooms and common areas, and some guests find the rooms dated. The pool gets described as cold and crowded. Some guests also report sales pitches at check-in and check-out. A dog or cat can come along, two at most, for $75 on a stay of one to four nights and $125 for five nights or more. A $25 mandatory charge goes on every night before tax, and self-parking is $65 a day. Drive in for three nights and you pay $270 on top of the room: $195 to park and $75 in charges before tax. There is no valet.
