Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The JW Marriott is the luxury tower of Tampa's Water Street district, 519 rooms topped by Beacon, a 27th-floor bar people book the hotel to drink in. Staff draw the steadiest praise, and small gestures stick with people, like a cake sent up for a birthday or anniversary. Rooms and public areas come across as clean and modern, and guests like the pool deck. Both the Tampa Convention Center and Benchmark International Arena are within walking distance, so event visitors can go on foot. Guests push back hardest on the bill, and drivers watching the total come away least happy. Food and drink prices draw complaints, and some paid for extras they expected to be included. The restaurants and the rooftop bar get more mixed service reports than the front desk, slow breakfasts among them, and an arena night or a large group in house can slow valet down. A $35 daily destination fee applies to every night, and it shows on Marriott's booking screen rather than the hotel's page. The hotel listed a food and beverage credit and a water taxi ride for two with its earlier $20 fee, so ask what the $35 includes. Valet is $55 a day, which makes $90 a night with the fee before tax. The hotel publishes no self-parking rate and asks you to call instead.
