Shell Key Preserve is roughly 1,800 acres of islands off Tierra Verde that you cannot drive to, and this is the guided way in for anyone who does not own a boat. The kayaks have transparent hulls, so the water beneath you is the point: seagrass, rays, the occasional manatee, with a stop on Shell Key's beach partway through. The standard daytime tour runs two to two and a half hours with a guide paddling alongside and narrating, and there is a shorter evening version lit by colour-changing LEDs, restricted to twelve and over. Two things to settle before booking. The kayaks carry a hard manufacturer limit of 250 pounds per rider and 425 pounds per tandem, and it is enforced at check-in rather than waived, so larger guests can be turned away at the dock having already paid. And the ticket is final: unless you buy the optional trip protection, a change of plans, an illness or a no-show forfeits the whole price. The only refund without it comes when the company itself calls conditions unsafe, which means winds over roughly 15 mph or lightning nearby. Light rain alone does not stop a tour.

How long is the tour and is a guide with you the whole way?
The daytime tour runs two to two and a half hours and the evening tour 90 minutes to two hours. Every tour is guided: a company guide paddles with the group and narrates the wildlife and the ecosystem along the way.
What makes it a clear kayak?
The hull is transparent rather than solid plastic, so you can see straight down into the water while you paddle. The route passes mangroves and sandbars with a stop on Shell Key's beach, and rays, dolphins and manatees are all possible.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes, and it is not flexible. The manufacturer sets 250 pounds per rider and 425 pounds combined per tandem kayak, and the company enforces it at check-in, so it is worth knowing before you drive out rather than at the dock.
What happens if the weather turns?
Light rain does not cancel a tour. The company calls it off for unsafe conditions, generally winds above about 15 mph or lightning in the area, and when it does you get a full refund or a free reschedule.
Can I get a refund if my plans change?
Only if you bought the optional trip protection, and then only up to 24 hours ahead. Without it all sales are final, so a change of plans or a no-show forfeits the full price.
