Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Hotel Haya is on 7th Avenue in the middle of Ybor City's restaurant and bar strip, and most of what guests say comes back to that address. They like walking out to dinner and back. They also keep bringing up the design, which draws on Ybor's Cuban and Spanish history, and the courtyard pool. Some rooms face a nightclub, and guests report music and crowd noise from the street reaching them late, so light sleepers should think hard before booking a Friday or Saturday. The restaurant and café downstairs get real credit, which helps because the rooms have no coffee maker. Morning coffee is a lobby station paid for by the $25 plus tax nightly destination fee, which also covers WiFi, the gym, pool access and a one-time $20 food and drink credit. Valet is the only parking the hotel lists, at $39 a night with unlimited in-and-out, and together with the fee that comes to $64 a night before tax. Couples and weekend visitors who want to be inside the district get the most from a stay here. Drivers hoping for cheap self-parking get the least, though leaving the car behind is realistic, since the free TECO streetcar stops in Ybor and runs to Sparkman Wharf and the convention center.
