Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

The Churchill calls its nightly fee a historic preservation fee, and the November 17 booking screen itemized it at $26.00 with $4.15 of tax on it, $30.15 a night before the room's own 15.95%. The per-night price on that screen already counts the fee in. The hotel says the money goes toward protecting and maintaining the property, and the age shows in the older room systems: the research found loud air conditioning that did not cool and a toilet that would not flush properly. It also found spacious rooms and a quiet block north of the circle, with the Chartwell restaurant on site and a 24-hour fitness center that has Peloton bikes. Smoking in a room costs $500 if the hotel finds evidence. Pets are not allowed, though service animals stay free with notice and documentation. Valet is the only parking listed, $60 plus tax a night, on top of the per-night price the screen shows.
