Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Hotel Madera's $29 amenity fee includes a welcome cocktail from 5 to 6 PM in the Lounge and La Colombe coffee and tea in the room. On the booking screen the fee is already inside the rate ("Includes $ 29.00 Amenity Fees per night"). Tax at 15.95% is added after that. Valet is the expensive way to park: $55 a night plus the 18% DC parking tax comes to $64.90, and an oversized vehicle is $65 plus tax. Public garages nearby run $28 to $38 overnight plus tax. Guests must be at least 21 with a government ID and a credit card to check in at 3 PM, and a late check-out after 5 PM costs a half-day charge. Older accounts complain about tiny bathrooms. Pets cost nothing, and the hotel sets no weight limit. The hotel used to be a Kimpton. Three guest bicycles go out first come, first served for up to four hours. The Dupont Circle Metro is two blocks away.
