Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Anyone who buys a day pass can use NOPSI's rooftop pool, and on a warm weekend Above the Grid can feel more like a public bar than a hotel amenity. The hotel itself is a 1927 downtown building converted to 216 rooms, and guests bring up the restored lobby often. Rooms get described as spacious and comfortable, which is not a given in a downtown conversion. The staff come up often, and warmly. Housekeeping is less steady, with some stays reporting a spotless room and others not. The roof draws people here and is also the thing to plan around, so if quiet matters, ask for a room away from it when you reserve. The mandatory Destination Charge is $35 a night. It covers Wi-Fi, bottled water, two drink vouchers, a welcome amenity, gym access and rooftop access, though guests complain the perks are hard to actually use, so treat it as part of the rate. NOPSI doesn't publish a parking rate on its own site, so call the front desk before you drive downtown. Book it if you want a historic building with some design to it and a lively roof, and you don't mind a daily charge on top of the room.
