Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Booking the Monteleone gets you one of two fairly different hotels. Traditional rooms in the older part of the building run snug, and some have a small or obstructed window that lets in little daylight. Iberville Tower rooms are the renovated ones, and guests who land there prefer them; the hotel gives Tower guests a private elevator and a dedicated front desk as well. Rooms facing Royal Street pick up outside noise, though plenty of guests report a quiet night. A listing doesn't always make clear which kind of room you're booking or which way it faces, so read the room-category name before you pay. The Carousel Bar has been turning since 1949 and makes a full rotation every 15 minutes, with live music seven nights a week and nobody under 21 admitted after 6pm. Seats go early. The hotel's own FAQ says flatly that it charges no resort fee. Valet is $50 a night plus tax and applies to every vehicle, and no self-parking rate is published anywhere on the site, so budget that $50 as a fixed line if you're driving. The valet also can't take a car over 9 feet 4 inches high or 197 inches long, which is worth measuring before you turn onto Royal Street.
