Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
At The Langham, Chicago, the side of the building your room faces matters. Some west-facing rooms look straight at a blank wall of the building next door, and the river side is the one to request when you book. The rest is a full-service hotel with a pool and the Chuan Spa, and its booking screen adds nothing to the rate but Chicago's 18.9% room tax. There is no self-park on site. Valet is $88 a day with in-and-out privileges, and the hotel's pages don't say whether tax is added. The other choice is the AMA Parking Garage about half a block away, which takes overnight cars but has a 6-foot-4 clearance and no in-and-out, and the hotel posts no rate for it. At check-in the hotel pre-authorizes your card for the cost of the stay plus $200 a day for incidentals, with the incidentals part capped at $600. Dogs and cats of 35 pounds or less are welcome, with a $150 non-refundable cleaning fee on short stays. Langham Club access is extra, at $160 per person per day.
