Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown South Loop serves a free hot breakfast, and Hilton's booking screen shows no mandatory charge, so a guest who isn't parking pays the rate plus Chicago's 18.9% room tax and nothing else. Guests praise the front desk, the lake-view rooms and roomy suites with kitchens. The complaint that kept coming up this summer was the lifts: one of the two was out of service, and one guest waited more than 20 minutes for one on the morning of checkout. Others found the pool out of towels for hours and the breakfast room packed. Drivers get valet only, $70 a day, $350 across a five-night show week before tax. At Hyatt Regency McCormick Place the $20 destination fee and $40 self-parking come to $60 a night, so a driver here pays $10 a night more and walks 33 minutes to the halls instead of seven. No hotel in this area sits farther from McCormick Place: 1.56 miles to the King Drive entrance of the West Building, a cold walk in December. Up to two dogs or cats can stay, $50 for one to four nights and $75 for five or more. On Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December, the Midwest Clinic's middle nights, Hilton listed 11 and 12 rooms here while the Marriott Marquis by the halls had none.
