Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown South Loop pays off for someone who arrives without a car. Its booking screen shows no mandatory charge, so against the Marriott Marquis's $30 destination fee you keep $120 over four nights, before tax (Chicago's 18.9% room tax goes on the rate). Drive, and the saving disappears. There's no self-parking. Valet is $70 a day, and four nights of it come to $280, the same as the Marquis's fee plus self-parking over that stay. Guests find the rooms clean and modern, and the corner kings get singled out for their city views. Staff will hold your bags for an early arrival or a late checkout. Dogs and cats stay for $50 up to four nights and $75 for longer. The museums and the L are both close. There's no room service and not much food on site, and daily housekeeping may need asking for. McCormick Place West is 33 minutes away on foot (1.52 miles), so a show week here means a ride each morning. Trains and street sound carry into the rooms, and some guests mention the air conditioning. A light sleeper should ask for a high floor away from the tracks.
