Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The Barrymore faces the Straz Center across Fortune Street, with the Riverwalk at its door. Guests come for a show at the Straz or a University of Tampa move-in weekend, and plenty say they would return for the same walk. The free shuttle gets nearly as much use: it runs anywhere within 2 miles of the hotel from 8am to 10pm, first come, first served, and guests lean on it for concerts and campus drop-offs instead of calling a rideshare. It won't take you to the airport. This was a Howard Johnson until 2014, and it shows: recent guests describe peeling paint, cracked walls, older bathrooms and a musty smell in some rooms. Most still call their room clean, though a few recent stays report dirt or mildew, and nothing on the hotel's own site points to a room renovation. Worn finishes will spoil this one for some people, and the Riverwalk has newer buildings. Gaudin Kitchen & Bar off the lobby keeps a lot of guests on property in the evening, mostly for happy hour, and the bar stays open to 1am. The hotel publishes no resort or destination fee. Self-parking in its gated lot is $20 per night per vehicle, and the hotel describes no valet service. Pets pay a flat $75 for the whole stay.
