Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Hotel Flor has no self-parking and adds a mandatory destination charge, and the guests who leave unhappy are mostly the ones who didn't plan for either. Some say nobody explained the add-ons when they booked, so the bill at check-in came out well above the room rate they had in mind. Hilton's info page for the hotel doesn't list the destination charge, but the booking screen does: $30 a night plus tax. Valet is the only way to park, at $52 a night with in-and-out privileges, which puts a driver at $82 a night plus tax on top of the room. Two parts of the charge are worth using. The $15 daily food and beverage credit works at the hotel's outlets, including The Dan, the ground-floor restaurant guests single out for its cooking and its servers. The local shuttle covers downtown trips once the car is parked. The building is a restored 1920s tower under Hilton's Tapestry flag, and guests call the rooms clean and comfortable to sleep in. Of the staff, the valet team comes up more than anyone, which fits a hotel where every driver hands over the keys. Drivers who want to park their own car should book somewhere else, and so should anyone who treats the quoted rate as the final price. Book it if you want the old building and have already budgeted for both charges.
