Design is the whole argument here, and it mostly wins. The EDITION is a preserved 1950s beach resort reworked into a design hotel, and reviewers keep circling the same things: the marble lobby, the Sundial Pool with its original retro diving board, the seasonal ice rink, pool and beach staff who actually come around, and the Matador Room, the Jean-Georges restaurant people book without staying here. They circle the same faults too. Rooms are the weak link, small and minimal enough that guests read them as unfinished, with shallow bathroom fixtures and showers that regulars rate below other EDITION properties. Then the money. Valet is the only parking at $65 a day, $80 overnight for an oversize car, a beach chair runs about $25 and an umbrella about $25 more, and Marriott's booking screen shows a $75 resort fee included in the nightly rate. The part first-timers miss: mid-beach is quiet, which is the appeal, and it also means there is very little to walk to. Meals, drinks and evenings funnel back through the hotel's own paid outlets, or you are in a rideshare. Couples and small groups who want a self-contained design retreat, and who will happily eat and drink on site, get their money's worth. Families who need space, and anyone picturing a stroll into the South Beach strip, will be happier somewhere else.

The rooms are the weakest part of the package, small and spare for what the hotel costs, and the mid-beach setting means most of your spending happens on site. If you want a big room, or a walkable strip of restaurants and bars outside the door, your money goes further elsewhere.
