Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Viceroy Santa Monica gives you two pools on Ocean Avenue, and that's most of the case for it. Six open-air cabanas sit around them, rented through the concierge, and the pool area is open from 6 am to 10 pm. Sugar Palm serves coastal food on a terrace under palm trees, with happy hour from 3 to 6 every day. What you pay on top of the room is the weak spot. Every night carries a $43 Guest Amenities Fee, $49.54 once tax is on it. The hotel's list of what that buys is mostly small stuff: Wi-Fi, gym access, a welcome drink at check-in, bottled water in the room, and yoga classes and priority on a rental bike when there's room. That's thin for nearly fifty dollars. Valet is the only parking the hotel lists, $62 plus tax on the FAQ and $60 on the overview page, and Santa Monica doesn't allow overnight street parking. With a car, the fee and valet come to about $112 a night before parking tax. A three-night weekend comes to around $335. Leaving the car at home is easy to argue for. There's no shuttle, but LAX is about 8 miles off and the hotel puts a taxi or Uber at roughly $25. Dog owners do well here: two dogs up to 50 pounds each, $150 per pet for the whole stay. Check-out is 11 am, and keeping the room until 3 pm costs half the best available rate. After 3 it's a full night.
