Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

The resort fee at Shutters on the Beach is mostly about getting around without a car. It's $60 a night plus 15% tax, about $69, and it pays for a two-hour bike rental every day and an afternoon house car for trips within 3 miles. Weekend beach yoga and EV charging are in it too. The hotel puts the Santa Monica Pier within walking distance. If you come by rideshare and use the bikes and the house car, the fee earns its keep. Drive in and overnight valet adds $90 a night. It's the only parking the hotel lists, and its guide doesn't say whether tax is included. Fee plus valet comes to about $159 a night before the room and lodging tax, so a Friday-to-Sunday weekend puts $318 into fee and valet, $180 of it for a car that mostly sits with the valet. The guide also never says whether the $60 is already folded into the nightly price you're shown. Watch the total at checkout. The heated pool is kept for registered guests, but the chairs are first come, first served, and a private cabana is the only seat you can book ahead. Check-in isn't until 4 pm, which is late on a beach day, and getting in early depends on availability. Dogs are welcome up to 25 pounds.
