Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Santa Monica Proper put its pool on the roof and handed the deck to a restaurant. Calabra runs up there with the ocean in view, and the hotel calls it the only rooftop pool-deck restaurant in the area. What it doesn't say is when the pool is open or who gets to use it, so call before you plan a day around it. Downstairs, Palma serves all day off the lobby and Surya Spa is on site. The fees are steep. Every night carries a $55 destination amenity fee plus tax, which the FAQ says covers amenities including Wi-Fi, and nothing on that page says the rate you're quoted already includes it. Valet is $90.27 a night, tax included, with in-and-out, and the hotel publishes no self-park rate. Drive in and you're paying $145.27 a night before the room and the tax on the fee. Over three nights that's $435.81. The FAQ points to Big Blue Bus routes near the hotel, and a guest who arrives by rideshare and wants dinner on the roof gets the most out of the place. Book the dates you mean. Check out a day early and you're still billed for that night, plus tax, and late check-out may cost extra. Dogs are welcome, two per room at up to 45 pounds each. The pet fee isn't published, but Proper Insider members don't pay it.

The hotel's address is 700 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, but you go in around the corner on 7th Street. It runs no shuttle that it mentions, and its FAQ points to Big Blue Bus routes near the hotel instead. The FAQ puts the pier about 9 minutes away and the Third Street Promenade about 6, but doesn't say whether that's on foot or by car, so check a map before you count on going without a car.

Santa Monica Proper Hotel FAQ

Does Santa Monica Proper charge a resort fee?

Yes. It's a $55 destination amenity fee per night, plus tax, and the hotel's FAQ says it covers amenities including Wi-Fi. The FAQ doesn't say whether the nightly rate you're shown already includes it.

How much is parking at Santa Monica Proper?

$90.27 a night for valet, tax included, with in-and-out privileges. No self-parking rate is published, and leaving your car after check-out costs extra. Add the $55 nightly fee and a driver pays $145.27 a night on top of the room, plus tax on the fee.

Does Santa Monica Proper have a pool?

Yes, on the roof. It's on the deck at Calabra, the rooftop restaurant, looking out to the ocean. The hotel doesn't publish pool hours or access rules, so ask the front desk at (310) 620-9990.

What time is check-in and check-out at Santa Monica Proper?

Check-in is after 4 pm and check-out is noon. Late check-out may come with a fee, and leaving before your booked departure date costs one night plus tax.

Can I bring my dog to Santa Monica Proper?

Yes, if it weighs 45 pounds or less. The hotel takes dogs only, up to two per room. The pet fee isn't published, and Proper Insider members don't pay it.

Is Santa Monica Proper worth it for a last-minute stay?

Without a car, and if the rooftop at Calabra is what you came for, it can be. With a car, budget $145.27 a night in fee and valet before the room, and only book the nights you're sure of, since leaving early still costs a night.
