Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Oceana has no standard rooms. All 70 are suites, and the hotel says no two are alike. Days here run around the pool, a heated freeform one set among olive trees and daybeds, with The Veranda serving breakfast from 7 and lunch from 11:30 beside it. Dinner is La Monique, a French brasserie open 5:30 to 10, or a wagyu burger at La Petite Monique. Room service stops at 5:30 pm. That's an early cutoff for a hotel built entirely of suites, and it means the suite you paid for won't see a room-service dinner. The hotel's own pages are thin on what you'd check before booking. They give no check-in or check-out time, and on pets they say only that service animals are permitted. They never mention the resort charge either, which Hilton's rooms screen puts at $55 a night for internet, daily yoga, beach cruiser bikes, Peloton treadmills and the lobby coffee. Parking is valet only, at a nightly price the hotel doesn't list. If you're driving, book the Valet & Stay package: nightly valet with unlimited in-and-out is included, along with beach cruisers, so parking stops being a guess. On any other rate, call (800) 777-0758 for the valet figure first. It fits a couple who want a suite and a long afternoon by the pool and don't mind leaving the suite to eat. Reservations run through Hilton, and California requires mandatory fees to be in the displayed price, so the total on that screen is the one to judge it by.

Oceana is at 849 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, ZIP 90403. The hotel's pages give no walking time to the sand or the Santa Monica Pier, so check the distance on a map before you plan a stay without the car. The Valet & Stay package includes beach cruisers, which is one way to cover it.

Oceana Santa Monica FAQ

Does Oceana Santa Monica charge a resort fee?

Yes, a $55 Daily Resort Charge per night. Hilton's rooms screen shows it, and it covers internet, daily yoga, beach cruiser bikes, Peloton treadmills, beach activity concierge and towels, lobby coffee, tea and soft drinks, and two food and two drink tasters at the pool. The hotel's own pages don't mention it. California law requires mandatory fees to be included in the displayed price, so the total on the booking screen is the figure to go by.

How much is parking at Oceana Santa Monica?

The hotel doesn't publish the nightly price. Parking is valet only, with self-parking limited to accessible spaces near the main lobby. The Valet & Stay package includes nightly valet with unlimited in-and-out, so book that if you're driving, or call (800) 777-0758 for the rate on any other booking.

What time is check-in at Oceana Santa Monica?

The hotel's site doesn't publish check-in or check-out times, so call before you plan an early arrival. The Oceana Escape package guarantees a 2 pm late check-out.

Can I bring my dog to Oceana Santa Monica?

Service animals are permitted. The hotel publishes no pet policy beyond that, so call (800) 777-0758 before bringing a pet.

Does Oceana Santa Monica have a pool?

Yes, a heated freeform pool with olive trees and daybeds. The Veranda serves breakfast from 7 am and lunch from 11:30 am beside it, and a pool lift is available on request. The hotel doesn't publish pool hours.

Is Oceana Santa Monica worth it for a last-minute stay?

Yes, if you want a suite rather than a standard room on Ocean Avenue and a pool day is part of the plan. Drive in on the Valet & Stay package so parking is covered, and expect the $55 nightly resort charge on Hilton's booking screen, since the hotel's own pages list neither it nor a valet rate. If you like ordering dinner to the room, know that in-room dining ends at 5:30 pm.
