Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Until January 19, The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey is a renovation you can sleep in. The hotel says the project makes noise every day from 8 am to 5 pm through January 19, and its page gives no year. Ask at booking how close your room will be to the work. Most of the reason to come here stays open anyway. The heated saltwater pool and its hot tub keep running, and so do the fitness center and the tennis and pickleball courts. Cast & Plow, the farm-to-table restaurant, faces the marina. WAVE Bar + Grill is the casual one on the water, and it's seasonal. Two dogs can share your room at up to 30 pounds each, for $150 a stay. Don't book it for Santa Monica. The address is 4375 Admiralty Way on the harbor, about 4 miles south of Santa Monica. Valet is $65 a day, and the hotel doesn't say whether tax is extra or whether you can take the car out and back. The overview page lists no resort fee, but Marriott's rate screen shows a $40 destination fee every night. That puts a night with the car at $105 over the room rate, and a Friday and Saturday at $210, before any tax on the valet. If the pool and the courts are the trip, the work gets in your way less. To skip the noise, move your dates past January 19.
