Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Union Station is a 4-minute walk from Phoenix Park Hotel, and the Dubliner, an Irish pub with live music every night, is on the lobby level. Rooms run small. It is the complaint that keeps coming up. Check-in is 3 PM, with early arrival by request, and checkout is 11 AM. You must be 18 to check in, and pets are not allowed, apart from service dogs. The mandatory daily facility fee is $32, and the hotel's own FAQ says that figure is inclusive of tax. It buys a welcome drink at the Dubliner, a coffee lounge open around the clock, two bottled waters a day and Wi-Fi. The booking screen for November 18 backed the amount up: its taxes-and-fees line works out to the 15.95% DC tax plus $32, and November 17 showed no price at all. There is no self-parking. Valet is $68 a day with tax included and no in-and-out rights, and the hotel's garage has size and height limits that send oversize vehicles to the Union Station garage. Add the fee and the valet and a driver pays $100 a night beyond the room and its tax.
