Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Harbour Island puts this Westin a short walk over the bridge from the Tampa Convention Center and Benchmark International Arena (formerly Amalie Arena), and that walk is what guests talk about most: they left the car and went everywhere on foot, with a coffee shop and restaurants next door. Convention-goers and people headed to an event at the arena get the most out of it. Leave the car at home if you can. Valet is the only parking the hotel lists, at $50 a day ($60 for oversized vehicles), and at busy times recent guests describe waiting up to about an hour for the car to come back. With the $30 nightly destination fee on top, a driver pays $80 a night before tax beyond the room. The fee at least buys something: a daily $15 food and drink credit, a daily wine tasting for two, Wi-Fi, and Tampa History Center passes for two per stay. Beds and linens get steady praise. A renovation ran through the summer, and while it did, rooms varied by floor and dining was scaled back. The hotel now sells room types labeled "Newly Renovated," but we couldn't confirm the project has wrapped, so if a finished room matters to you, ask for one of the redone upper-floor rooms when you book.
