Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Sailport's suites are privately owned condos on Rocky Point, four minutes from Tampa International Airport, and every one comes with a full kitchen and a balcony over Old Tampa Bay. Guests keep coming back to the sunsets from those balconies (dolphins show up in the reviews too) and to the poolside bar by the small beach, where there's live music at the pool on Fridays. Recent reviews are much harder on the rooms: stained or torn carpet and peeling tub surrounds. Some units smell musty, and one guest said no amount of airing out fixed it. A few people found their suite dirty on arrival, and one had to be moved. Because each owner keeps up their own unit, one guest this summer described fresh upgrades while another got a ripped carpet, so the suite you draw matters more than the resort does. The sand is for lounging only, since the hotel says there is no water access from its beach. The guests who leave happiest are families and people on long work trips who wanted a kitchen near TPA and didn't mind dated furnishings. The resort fee is $18 plus tax a night, due at check-in, and it covers one reserved parking space. Otherwise parking is free, first come, first served, up to two cars per reservation.

Sailport sits on the quiet southeastern corner of Rocky Point, a small island off the Courtney Campbell Causeway, with Tampa International Airport four minutes away and the Westshore offices just over the bridge. The hotel puts the Courtney Campbell Trail and Ben T. Davis Beach each about 0.3 miles off, close enough to walk. Raymond James Stadium is 5.7 miles away, and for most of Tampa you'll be driving.

Sailport Waterfront Suites FAQ

Does Sailport Waterfront Suites charge a resort fee?

Yes, $18 plus tax per night, collected at check-in on every reservation. The hotel says it covers broadband internet, one reserved parking space, two bottled waters and access to the beach, volleyball court, Fitness Island and fishing pier. The fee list also names weekly housekeeping, but another section of the same FAQ page says housekeeping is suspended, so ask the front desk what you'll actually get.

Is parking free at Sailport?

Yes. Each reservation gets up to two complimentary self-parking spaces, first come, first served, and extra cars depend on space. There's no valet, and RVs, box trucks, boats and trailers aren't allowed on site.

How far is Sailport from Tampa International Airport?

About four minutes by car, according to the hotel, and it runs a complimentary airport shuttle.

Can you swim at Sailport's beach?

No. The hotel says its private beach has no water access, so it's for sitting and volleyball. The heated outdoor pool is where you swim.

What time is check-in at Sailport Waterfront Suites?

4 PM, at a 24-hour front desk. If a suite is ready you can pay $30 to check in as early as 7 AM. You must be 21, and the desk is cashless: bring a credit or debit card for the $100 incidental hold.

Can I cancel a last-minute booking at Sailport?

Only if you're more than 72 hours out. The first night's room and tax is charged when you book, and changes or cancellations inside 72 hours forfeit it. Advance Purchase rates are non-refundable.
