Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

John Portman built the Bonaventure on Figueroa Street between 1974 and 1977, and at 1,358 rooms it's a hotel you have to learn your way around. Twelve elevators run in four color-coded banks: Red Circle, Yellow Diamond, Green Square and Blue Triangle. Only Red Circle goes to the top. The top floor is numbered 35 even though the tower has 33 stories, because there's no 7th or 13th, and that's where LA Prime, the steakhouse, is. BonaVista Lounge sits a floor below and turns while you drink. It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays. CafeNOW, the grab-and-go counter, pours Starbucks coffee from 4 am to 2 am, which is handy on a late arrival or before an early flight. Marriott's rate screen includes a $30 destination fee every night, and valet is $57 a day. Arrive by car and the two come to $87 a night. Check-in is 4 pm and check-out is 11 am, a 19-hour window, which feels short once you've paid those extras.
