The cheapest hotel valet we could confirm here is $90 a day plus tax, and at least five hotels add a mandatory fee of $25 to $45 a night on top of the room. Grand Central sits in the middle, with the 4, 5, 6 and 7 trains underneath and the Long Island Rail Road running in from the JFK AirTrain at Jamaica, so the car is the easiest of those costs to drop.

A 2020 study for NYC City Planning says business travelers fill Midtown East's hotels for the office corridors along Lexington and Third Avenues, and that the UN keeps hotels in the far East 40s and 50s busy with diplomats and staff. That makes this a weekday market first. We found no published figure for how much a Friday or Saturday gives back here, so price a Thursday against a Saturday before you settle on either. The traffic keeps office hours too. All 15 Gridlock Alert days left on NYC DOT's 2026 list fall on a Tuesday through Friday, the first on November 18, and the congestion toll's peak starts at 5am on weekdays but not until 9am on weekends.
September is the hard month. The General Assembly's 2026 session opened September 8, with the general debate on September 22 to 26 and again on the 28th. NYPD closed First Avenue from 41st to 48th Street every day of the assembly and blocked the FDR's 42nd Street exit. DOT says Midtown traffic in General Assembly week has historically averaged under four miles an hour. Fifth Avenue, on the west edge, closes for parades: the Hispanic Day Parade on Sunday, October 11, between 43rd and 66th Streets, and the Columbus Day Parade the next day between 42nd and 72nd. Rockefeller Center lights its tree on December 2, which DOT also lists as a Gridlock Alert day. St. Patrick's Day steps off at Fifth and 44th at 11am on Wednesday, March 17, 2027. A week with no UN session and no parade is the one to price first.
At least five hotels here add a mandatory fee to the room: $25 a night including tax at the Library Hotel, $29.84 including tax at Pod 51, $30 plus tax at the Lotte New York Palace, and $45 plus tax at both the Omni Berkshire and the InterContinental Barclay. The InterContinental valets your car for $90 plus tax per 24 hours and the Omni for $95, neither with in-and-out. The Waldorf Astoria charges $110 and has no self-parking at all. The Library Hotel and Pod 51 have no garage of their own. Every hotel sits inside the congestion zone, where an E-ZPass car pays $9 once a day at peak or $2.25 overnight. A subway ride is $3, and the MTA caps a week of rides at $35.
At least five do, and the name changes at every desk. The Omni Berkshire Place adds a $45 destination charge plus tax, and the InterContinental New York Barclay a $45 amenity fee plus tax that comes with a $30 daily food and beverage credit. The Lotte New York Palace charges a $30 Historic Preservation Fee plus taxes, Pod 51 a $29.84 facility fee with tax included, and the Library Hotel a $25 resort fee including tax. Pod 51's booking screen folds its fee into a single taxes-and-fees line instead of naming it. The Waldorf Astoria showed no fee on its amenities page or its booking screen for a November night, which is not the same as publishing that there is none.
$90 to $110 a day for valet at the hotels we could confirm, or $55 to $65 at a garage the Library Hotel sends you to. The InterContinental Barclay charges $90 plus tax per 24 hours and the Omni Berkshire $95, neither with in-and-out. The Waldorf Astoria is $110 a day, or $125 for an oversized vehicle, and offers no self-parking. The Library Hotel and Pod 51 have no parking of their own. The Library points guests to a garage at 11 East 38th Street at $55 to $65 per 24 hours depending on the car, and Pod 51 validates a discount at the ICON garage at 136 East 51st Street without publishing the rate.
From JFK, the AirTrain plus the E train is $11.75, and the E stops at Lexington Av/53 St and 5 Av/53 St, inside this area. The AirTrain to Jamaica and the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central costs $16 at peak or $14 off-peak with the AirTrain included, and the MTA names Grand Central as the stop for the UN and Midtown East. From LaGuardia, the free Q70 bus runs nonstop from Terminal B to the 7 train at 74 St-Broadway in about 15 minutes in typical traffic, and the 7 runs to Grand Central for a $3 fare. The Q70 also stops at Woodside, where an LIRR ticket to Grand Central is $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 at peak.
The streets next to it close and traffic nearly stops. NYPD's plan for the 2026 session closed First Avenue from 41st to 48th Street every day, along with 44th to 47th Streets between First and Second Avenues. The block of 42nd Street from First to Second closed each day the meeting sat, until around 9pm, and the FDR's 42nd Street exit was blocked. The mayor also warned of rolling closures across the city as delegations moved, and DOT says Midtown traffic that week has historically averaged under four miles an hour. The 2026 general debate ran September 22 to 26 and September 28. Check the UN's dates for the 2027 session before you book a September stay.
Yes. Every hotel in Midtown East sits between 41st and 55th Streets, inside the Congestion Relief Zone that covers Manhattan from 60th Street south. With E-ZPass a car pays $9 once a day at peak, which is 5am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 9pm on weekends, or $2.25 overnight. Taxis are charged $0.75 a trip and rideshares $1.50 instead. That toll comes on top of the $90 or more a day that hotel valet costs here.
Grand Central-42 St for anything near 42nd Street. The 4, 6 and 7 stop there at all hours and the 5 does except late nights, and the S shuttle crosses to Times Square except late nights. Farther north, the 6 stops at 51 St with entrances on Lexington Avenue at 51st, 52nd and 53rd Streets, and the E stops at Lexington Av/53 St and 5 Av/53 St. A ride is $3, and once you have paid for 12 rides in seven days the rest are free.
