The marathon finish and the Macy's start are both here

Fall to Christmas is the expensive stretch. City Planning found Manhattan hotels more than 90 percent full through that season in 2018 and 2019, against about 75 percent in January. Across the city in 2025, luxury hotels averaged 82.2 percent occupancy and upscale ones 87.5 percent. January is the cheap month, and NYC Hotel Week discounts go live then at over 100 hotels.

Two of the city's big November dates are staged on this side of the park. The marathon finishes in Central Park on Sunday, November 1, a day after a 5K to the same line, and NYRR counted 59,226 finishers in 2025. Macy's inflates its balloons on the Upper West Side on Wednesday, November 25, and the 100th parade steps off from West 77th and Central Park West the next morning. New York City Ballet's Nutcracker opens on the Upper West Side on November 27 and runs to January 3. NYC DOT has named November 18, 19 and 24 gridlock alert days, along with eleven weekdays between December 2 and 18.

Sixtieth Street is the congestion toll line, and it cuts this area in two. A car with E-ZPass pays $9 once a day at peak, which runs 5am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 9pm at weekends, or $2.25 overnight. The Plaza, Park Lane, the Ritz-Carlton, the Essex House and 1 Hotel Central Park are inside the zone, and so is the Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle and 60th. The Empire, Hotel Beacon, The Lucerne and the Arthouse sit north of it. Valet is $110 a night at The Plaza and $135 at the Ritz-Carlton, which keeps your car in a garage on West 57th and needs 45 minutes to bring it back. The Empire's partner garage on West 66th charges $52 for 24 hours. The Plaza adds a $65 nightly fee plus tax, while Beacon and Lucerne say they charge none. A subway ride is $3, and OMNY stops charging once you reach $35 in seven days.

Central Park deal questions

Do hotels near Central Park charge a resort or destination fee?

At least five of the ten we researched do. The Plaza charges a $65 Urban Experience Fee a night plus tax. Park Lane's $49 fee is mandatory and its booking screen folds it into the nightly rate, and 1 Hotel Central Park charges a $49 amenity fee a night, before tax, at check-in. On the Upper West Side the Arthouse charges a $40 Urban Fee plus tax and the Empire a $19.95 Residence Fee plus tax. Hotel Beacon and The Lucerne both say they charge none, and the Mandarin Oriental's breakdown for a November night listed taxes and nothing else. We could not confirm a fee either way at the Ritz-Carlton or the JW Marriott Essex House, so check the total on the last booking screen.

How much does it cost to park at a Central Park hotel?

Between $52 and $135 for 24 hours. Park Lane's valet is $65 for a regular car but takes no SUVs or oversized vehicles; those go to the LAZ garage across West 58th, at $85 to self-park ($75 for a regular car). Valet is $110 a night at The Plaza with no in-and-out, $110 including tax at 1 Hotel Central Park, and $135 at the Ritz-Carlton, whose off-site garage has a 6 ft 2 in clearance. The Empire on West 63rd is $79 for valet or $52 at its partner garage on West 66th, and the Arthouse's partner garage on West 81st is $75 plus tax. Hotel Beacon has no parking of its own, and the Mandarin Oriental is valet only and publishes no rate.

Will I pay the congestion toll driving to my hotel?

Only if the hotel is on or below 60th Street. The MTA's Congestion Relief Zone covers Manhattan south of and including 60th, which takes in The Plaza, Park Lane, the Ritz-Carlton, the Essex House, 1 Hotel Central Park and the Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle. With E-ZPass that is $9 at peak (5am to 9pm weekdays, 9am to 9pm weekends) and $2.25 overnight, charged once a day. The Empire, Hotel Beacon, The Lucerne and the Arthouse are north of the line. Come in from the north, or stay on the West Side Highway, which the MTA leaves out of the zone, and you won't enter it. A cab or rideshare that enters the zone pays its own per-trip charge: 75 cents in a yellow cab, $1.50 in an app-based ride.

What is the cheapest way here from the airports?

From LaGuardia, $3. The Q70 bus is free and runs nonstop from Terminals B and C to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Av in about 15 minutes, and the R from there stops at 5 Av/59 St and 57 St-7 Av. From JFK, the AirTrain to Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av and the E into Manhattan come to $11.75 for most riders. Stay on the E to 7 Av at 53rd for Central Park South, or change at 42 St-Port Authority for the 1 at Times Sq, which runs up to Columbus Circle, 66th, 72nd and 79th. A yellow cab from JFK is a flat $70 plus $4 in surcharges. Add 75 cents if your hotel is on or below 60th and $5 between 4pm and 8pm on weekdays, then tolls and tip. Newark's AirTrain is $8.75 on its own and stops at the airport's rail station, where you change to NJ Transit or Amtrak.

Can I get to my hotel by car on marathon day or Thanksgiving?

Not easily on Central Park South or Central Park West. In 2025, West 59th Street from Columbus Circle to Fifth, which is Central Park South, was listed closed from 7am to 9pm on marathon day, and Central Park West from 59th to 77th from 6am to 9:30pm. On Thanksgiving 2025, Central Park West from 72nd to 59th closed at 9pm the night before and stayed shut until 3pm, and 59th Street from Fifth to Columbus Circle was closed from 1am to 5pm. Those are last year's lists, and the NYPD decides closures and reopenings on the day. This year's marathon is Sunday, November 1, and the parade, which starts at West 77th and Central Park West, is Thursday, November 26.

When is it cheapest to stay near Central Park?

January. City Planning put Manhattan occupancy at about 75 percent in January in 2018 and 2019, against more than 90 percent from fall to Christmas, and NYC Hotel Week discounts at over 100 hotels go live in January 2027. Marathon weekend is the one to avoid: City Planning gives the marathon as its example of the nights when the city's hotels run more than 95 percent full.
