Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
A fee that the Melrose's own fact sheet puts at $29 is $30 plus tax on its booking screen, which comes to $34.79 a night as a Historic Preservation Fee. The screen governs. The hotel says the fee covers "the protection and maintenance of the property and its amenities," which is nothing you can use. Valet at 2430 Pennsylvania Ave NW is $80 plus tax a night, or $90 for oversized vehicles, so fee and valet together run $114.79 a night before tax on the valet. The hotel has 240 rooms and a Historic Hotels of America badge on its site. The fitness center is open 24 hours and has Peloton bikes. Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro is 5 minutes away on foot. The rooms are dated and the bathrooms are small. Dogs up to 75 lbs pay $75 per room once, non-refundable, and are kept out of the fitness center, lounge and dining areas. We read the screen for November 18, because November 17 showed no rooms available.
