Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

The Crowne Plaza has 450 covered, secured spaces in a garage attached to the hotel. At $24 a night with in and out privileges, it is the cheapest overnight rate of the twelve after the Lorenzo's $20. The rest is a mid-priced chain room 11 minutes' walk from the convention center, with an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a restaurant and free Wi-Fi. IHG's booking screen for November 11 listed one line under taxes and additional charges, state tax at 18.25% of the rate per night, so no resort or destination fee showed. The deposit is the room and tax plus $75 a night for incidentals, so three nights put $225 on hold beyond the room, against $72 of parking. Housekeeping isn't automatic, and you have to ask for it. Guests find the breakfast bland, and early check-in costs extra. You have to be 21 to check in. The hotel runs no complimentary shuttle and does not allow pets. The garage clears 6 feet 4 inches, so trucks with racks and 15-passenger vans won't fit.
