Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Hotel de la Monnaie is a vacation-ownership resort, a timeshare, and owners stay here alongside the people renting the suites they aren't using. You rent online through Vacatia or by phone with the resort, and Vacatia's checkout page is where the extra cost shows up: a $50 cleaning fee due at the resort, outside the total it quotes, plus a $50 refundable deposit at check-in. The resort's own site never mentions the cleaning fee. Garage parking is free but limited, first come, first served. Every unit is a suite with one or two bedrooms and a kitchenette with a stove top, microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker, and even the two-bedroom has a single bathroom. Guests keep calling the rooms dated. A partial refresh around 2024 swapped the old carpet for new floors and updated some bathrooms, but reviews from 2025 and 2026 still describe scuffed furniture and cabinets in a building that feels worn. Small repairs lag behind: a shower that swings between scalding and cold, a door that won't latch, a flickering light, a microwave that quit. People keep booking it anyway for the walk to the Frenchmen Street clubs and the French Market, and for a separate bedroom and a place to cook instead of two hotel rooms. The building faces active freight tracks, and trains with their horns wake guests at night, something management has acknowledged in its replies. Light sleepers should take that seriously.

Is Hotel de la Monnaie a hotel or a timeshare?
A timeshare. The resort calls itself a timeshare property, and owners stay in the building alongside renters. It says it isn't set up for its own online reservations because owner use changes, so rentals go through Vacatia online or through the resort's reservations line at (504) 947-0009.
Does Hotel de la Monnaie charge a resort fee or cleaning fee?
No resort fee, but there is a $50 cleaning fee. It shows up only on Vacatia's checkout page, under fees due at the resort, and it isn't included in the total Vacatia quotes. A separate $50 deposit for incidentals is collected at check-in and refunded.
Is parking free at Hotel de la Monnaie?
Yes, but spaces are limited. The garage works on a first-come basis, and when it's full you're paying for a nearby lot or a street meter. No valet service is published.
Is Hotel de la Monnaie noisy at night?
It can be. The building faces active freight tracks, and guests report trains and their horns waking them at night. Management has acknowledged the noise in its replies to guests.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is 3:00 PM and check-out is 10:30 AM. Plan around that half-hour-early checkout if you have a late flight.
Can I walk to the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street?
Yes. The Quarter starts across Esplanade Avenue, right at the Old Mint, and Frenchmen Street is a couple of blocks the other way. The riverfront streetcar stops less than a block from the door.
