Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The Vinoy opened in 1925 and is the building St. Petersburg puts on its postcards, back under the Autograph Collection flag since 2023 after a renovation that updated the rooms without sanding the history off them. The rooms are large and genuinely modern inside a landmark shell, which is most of what the money buys. At least two recent stays ended in a room with the windows blocked out or missing, one of them in the historic building, and low floors can face a roof or a delivery area. A category with the word Historic in its name guarantees nothing about what you see, and a guest who asked to move was quoted a charge for it. The view is only yours if it is written into the room category on the reservation. Valet is the only way to park, published at $50 a day with nothing complimentary. The hotel lists no resort fee on any of its own pages, yet guests keep describing a mandatory nightly one on the folio. No amount for it is published anywhere. The front desk runs cold in a lot of recent reports, and waits past the 4pm check-in are common, including two hours for a guest who had called ahead about an early arrival. The restaurants fill on busy weekends, and the main dinner room can be booked out a day ahead even for people sleeping upstairs.

Open in Maps →You are on the northeast waterfront at 5th Avenue NE, with Vinoy Park and North Straub Park across the street and the bay behind them. Beach Drive runs along the front of the property, which puts the Museum of Fine Arts and a run of restaurants within a couple of blocks on foot. The St. Pete Pier is about a ten-minute walk down the water and the Dali Museum sits farther south along it; the Gulf beaches are a drive across the peninsula.

Will I get a water view?
Only if you book a named bay-view category. Recent stays included rooms with the windows blocked out or missing, one of them in the historic building, and rooms on low floors facing a roof or a delivery area. One guest who asked to move was quoted a charge for it.
What will I pay on top of the room?
Valet parking at $50.00 a day, plus a resort fee the hotel never states. Nothing is complimentary and no self-park rate is published, so valet is the floor. Guests keep reporting a mandatory nightly charge on the bill, but no resort, destination or amenity fee appears on the hotel's overview page, its information panel, its FAQ or its rooms page.
How far is the St. Pete Pier?
About a ten-minute walk along the water. Beach Drive starts at the front of the property and the Museum of Fine Arts is a couple of blocks from it. The Gulf beaches are a different trip, a drive across the peninsula.
How early can I get into a room?
Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 11:00 am. Waits well past 4pm show up repeatedly in recent guest reports, including two hours for a guest who had called ahead about an early arrival, so plan for your bags to sit with the bell desk.
Are pets allowed?
Yes, up to two per room at 40 lbs each, with a non-refundable $150 fee for the stay.
Can I get a table at the restaurants if I'm staying there?
Not reliably on a busy weekend. The main dinner restaurant gets booked out even for hotel guests trying a day ahead, and breakfast can mean a wait when the restaurants are full.
