Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Most of The Birchwood's 18 rooms look onto the courtyard, and that courtyard is the restaurant patio and the way up to the rooftop bar. Guests hear diners until about 10:30pm, then music from the roof, sometimes past midnight, and guests were still raising it in 2026. Street-side rooms swap it for traffic. Those same venues are a large part of the appeal. Guests bring up dinners downstairs and the view over the bay from the roof almost as often as the rooms, which are large and historic in feel, with big bathrooms that have clawfoot tubs and rain showers. The inn is on Beach Drive across from the waterfront park, and the Museum of Fine Arts is about two minutes away on foot. Couples who plan to spend their evenings downtown get the most from it. Valet is the only parking, at $35 a night, and a few guests describe waiting for the car. No resort fee is published. What does get added is a 20% operations charge on every restaurant and bar check, which the hotel uses in place of tipping. Breakfast is a light continental spread that guests call thin for the price, and rooms have no fridge. The hotel's own replies to reviews say the front desk is staffed until 11pm, so anyone arriving later should call 727-896-1080 first, because late guests have been caught with nobody there to help.

Open in Maps →You're on Beach Drive NE in downtown St. Petersburg, across the street from the waterfront parks on Tampa Bay. The Museum of Fine Arts is about two minutes away on foot, and the St. Pete Pier is within walking range too. The Gulf beaches are a drive west, so a sand day means getting the car back from the valet.

Does The Birchwood charge a resort fee?
None is published. The hotel's site lists no resort or destination fee. The mandatory charge it does publish is a 20% operations charge on each restaurant and bar check, which it frames as replacing the tip.
How much is parking at The Birchwood?
$35 a night, and it's valet only. The hotel describes no self-park option: you pull into one of the two check-in spots out front and the front desk takes it from there.
Is The Birchwood noisy at night?
It can be. Most rooms face the courtyard, which is the restaurant patio and the route to the rooftop bar, and guests report hearing diners until about 10:30pm and rooftop music after that, sometimes past midnight. Street-side rooms get traffic noise instead.
Can I check in late at The Birchwood?
Call ahead before you count on it. The hotel publishes no check-in time, and its own replies to guest reviews say the front desk is staffed until 11pm, so arriving after that without a plan is risky. Reservations are on 727-896-1080.
Does The Birchwood allow dogs?
No. The hotel is pet-free. ADA service animals are allowed but have to stay with you at all times.
Can I walk to the beach from The Birchwood?
Not to a Gulf beach; those are a drive west. You're downtown on Tampa Bay, across Beach Drive from the waterfront park, with the pier and the Museum of Fine Arts in walking range.
