Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
In the evening the Avalon's lobby pours complimentary wine and champagne, and guests bring up that happy hour more than anything else about the place. The second thing they mention is next door. The Avalon is the Hollander's sister hotel, and Avalon guests can use the Hollander's pool and its restaurant. Parking on site is free and there is no resort fee, per the hotel's own site. The building dates to the 1930s, with an Art Deco lobby and a covered front porch, and the age shows in the floor plan. Standard rooms leave little floor to spare, and the bathrooms are tighter still. A few guests have also reported a musty smell in their room. In the most recent case the staff handled it well. For a kitchen or room to spread out, book one of the apartment-style suites in the adjacent building instead of a standard room. Beach Drive is roughly a ten-minute walk east, with the St. Pete Pier past it on the waterfront, so this works best for a couple or a pair of friends who are out all day and back for the evening glass. Ask at the desk for a dinner tip. Their restaurant suggestions come up often in reviews. Pets aren't allowed at the Avalon, even though the Hollander next door takes them.
