Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

A restaurant and bar with live music fills the ground floor of the Ponce De Leon, and guests keep reporting that music in their rooms until the early hours, with street noise and thin walls on top. Above it is a 1922 building at Central Avenue and Beach Drive, close enough to Beach Drive's restaurants and the museums that your car can stay parked. Hot water is the other steady complaint: people describe waiting minutes for a lukewarm shower, or getting none. Musty smells and mold in the showers recur, and the rooms show their age in chipped paint and old bathroom fixtures. In April 2025 two guests said the elevator was out for their entire stay, which hurts in a building where every room is above the lobby floor. Book it for a night or two of walking downtown on a budget, and only if you can sleep through a late bar downstairs. There's no hotel lot. The hotel sends you to the public garage kitty-corner, where the 7th and 8th floors cost $7 a day or $1 an hour, and the front desk sells a $15 unlimited in-and-out pass when it has them. No resort fee appears anywhere on the hotel's own site.

You're at the corner of Central Avenue and Beach Drive, the middle of downtown St. Petersburg, with the waterfront and Beach Drive's restaurants at the door. The St. Pete Pier and the Museum of Fine Arts are an easy walk, and Central Avenue runs west toward the Edge District. The hotel notes construction on the lot across the street.
