Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Sabal Palms dates to 1926, which puts it among the earliest lodging places built on these barrier beaches, and the Caruso family has kept it small: around eleven units, every one with a kitchen or a kitchenette. That kitchen is the argument for staying here, and it is what makes a longer stay pencil out once you have stocked the fridge. The fee side backs it up. Parking is free on site, the inn states it charges no resort fee, and beach chairs, a paddleboard, the gas grill and the cruiser bikes are included in the room. Dogs are $50 per pet per stay, and cats are not accepted. Two things to know before you book. The inn lists a year-round heated outdoor pool, and guests compare it to a ten-person hot tub with jets, so adjust your expectations if you pictured swimming laps. And three of the units are sold as Shorty Suites, with ceilings between 6'3" and 6'6", so anyone tall should book by unit number. Rooms run compact, and a studio gets tight fast with kids in it. You also face the Gulf across Gulf Way, a two-lane beach road, so you cross pavement to reach the sand. Check-in is 3 PM and checkout is 11 AM. It suits couples and repeat visitors who cook their own breakfast and want a quiet block.
