Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

Havana Inn is five units in a restored building on Gulf Way, and every one has a kitchen or a kitchenette, which is the point of the place. Unit 1 sleeps a group across three bedrooms and two baths, and unit 5 is a small cottage. There is no front desk at 1007. You register up the street at 1301, the Sabal Palms Inn, which is also where the pool is, since Havana Inn has none of its own. The same operator runs both, and the gear comes with the room: bikes, beach chairs, paddleboards and gas grills. The sand is directly across Gulf Way, so the walk up to register is the real cost of the arrangement. Parking is where it gets tight. There are three spaces behind the building for those five units, so at check-in the inn enters your license plate into the city database, which covers you on Pass-a-Grille streets where the public meters run $3.25 an hour from 8 AM to 8 PM. Arrive late on a weekend and you will be using that street parking, or the free spaces on 8th Avenue. There is no resort fee, and dogs run $75 per stay, with no cats accepted. Check-in starts at 3 PM and check-out is 11 AM. It suits a family or a group that wants to cook and can live with a two-address routine.
