Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

This is a 1970 Howard Johnson that OTO Development bought in December 2019 for $34.5 million, gutted, and reopened on April 30, 2021 as a 144-room Hilton Garden Inn, and that history explains a lot of what guests report. It stands five floors, with a plain street-side entrance and a small balcony or patio off every room. Coconut Charlie's Beach Bar sits at the sand end with fire pits and live music daily, and staff set out loungers and cabanas each morning and pull them in around 5pm at no extra charge. The pool sits mid-property, keycard gated, heated, open dawn to dusk. Self-parking is posted at $25 a day with in and out privileges, and there is no valet. Guests report circling for a space on busy afternoons. Breakfast is not included, though the Grill side of Coconut Charlie's opens at 7am and there is a Dunkin' across Gulf Blvd. Pets run $75 for one to four nights and $125 beyond that, two maximum at 75 pounds or less. There is no resort fee. The catch is volume: guests describe the beach-bar band carrying into gulf-front rooms and across the pool deck through most of the day and into the evening, so anyone who wants a quiet balcony should ask for a room at the far end from the bar.
