Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

The whole idea here is that you never leave. JW Marriott Grande Lakes spreads across a 500-acre lakefront estate it shares with the Ritz-Carlton next door, built so a day without a theme park feels like the whole point. The Grande Lakes Waterpark anchors it: a quarter-mile lazy river with zero-entry splash zones, the AquaVenture obstacle course, and the PlayVenture playground, plus the Headwaters Slide Tower and its three waterslides. Grown-ups get a flag-service resort pool with private cabanas and swim-up daybeds, and the grande cabanas at the Oasis Lounge come with their own plunge pools and fire pits. Out on the lake, kayaks and pedal boats are included in the resort fee. There's a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole championship course, and the shared 40,000-square-foot Ritz-Carlton spa is a walk away. Weigh the stack: this is a full-fee luxury resort, so a daily destination fee plus valet or self-parking land on top of already top-tier rates. Five hundred acres is genuinely sprawling, so getting from your room to the water park to dinner means real walking or waiting on the shuttle. And you're car-dependent out here, a few miles from the parks with nothing walkable off-site. It suits families chasing a resort water-park day, golfers and couples booking a full no-park day, and anyone who wants one lakefront estate to hold the whole trip.
