Our take

By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer

You check in on the 70th floor. The InterContinental fills the top of the Wilshire Grand tower, with the lobby and its floor-to-ceiling windows up on 70 and Spire 73, an open-air bar, three floors higher. The view holds up. Guests grumble about getting around the building. It runs on smart elevators, and more than one guest says it took a while to learn which car to take. Spire 73 also closes in bad weather, so don't build a whole evening around it on a wet or windy night. Every night carries a Daily Facility Fee of $39 plus $6.32 tax, and IHG's rate screen lists a separate Los Angeles County Workforce Fee of $8 plus $1.30 tax beside it, so $54.62 between them. Part of the facility fee comes back as a $25 food and beverage credit each day, good for dinner at La Boucherie or Spire 73, so eat in at least once and it covers most of itself. There's also a $20 laundry credit per stay. Parking is valet or nothing, $65 overnight or $71.50 with the city's 10% parking tax. Arrive by car and the night costs $126.12 more than the room rate, before the room tax of about 16%. The front desk also holds $150 a night on a card for incidentals, and it won't take cash for that hold.
