Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
Boggy Creek is one of the closest fan-boat rides to the Orlando parks, about 30 minutes south of Disney on Lake Tohopekaliga, the marshy headwaters of the Everglades. A flat-bottomed airboat skims the shallow grass where wild alligators, wading birds and turtles actually live, with a USCG-licensed captain narrating as you go. Pick the 30-minute ride for the speed and the scenery, or the full hour if you want more water under you. Sunset and night rides run too, and the site doubles as a half-day family stop: there's a gem mine, a small wildlife area, and a BBQ restaurant, all bundled into the Ultimate package with park admission and lunch if you want to stretch it out. The catch is that wild means wild. Gator and bird sightings aren't guaranteed, and they thin out in the heat of a peak-summer midday, so a late-July noon ride can come up quiet. Afternoon Florida thunderstorms regularly delay or scrap departures, the open boat runs hot, loud and buggy, and the base 30-minute ride is short. The price climbs fast once you add the gem-mine and lunch upgrades, and you'll need a car for the drive down. Best for families, first-time Florida visitors, and wildlife lovers who go in knowing the gators call the shots.

How far is Boggy Creek from Disney World?
About 30 minutes south by car, on Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee. Budget the drive time and plan on having a car.
Will we actually see alligators?
Often, but it's not guaranteed. Wild gators and birds thin out in the midday summer heat, so a morning ride tends to give you the best odds.
How long is the airboat ride?
You choose: a 30-minute ride or a full hour, with sunset and night tours also offered. The base 30-minute trip is short, so go for the hour if you want more time on the water.
