Our take
By Matt Spaulding, Founder and writer
The New York Hilton Midtown is a convention hotel first, and its size shows at the front desk. Guests consistently describe long lines at check-in and again at checkout, and a few reached the desk to find the room they booked wasn't available. Elevator waits come up as well, with lift work going on through recent months. People put up with it for the address. MoMA is around the corner on West 53rd. Guests say the walk-everywhere location is the reason they come back. Rooms often turn out bigger than they expected for Manhattan. Standard rooms show their age, though, with worn carpet and slow drains. Ask for a high floor. The skyline rooms up there get the praise, and the low rooms facing Sixth Avenue get the sirens. Every night carries a $40 Daily Mandatory Destination Charge. Hilton's booking screen folds it into the price it shows, while the hotel's amenities page lists what it buys and leaves out the amount. That includes a $20 daily credit for food and drink in the hotel and $35 a day toward laundry service, and neither is worth anything unless you spend it there. First-time visitors who plan to see Midtown on foot get the most from this hotel. Light sleepers in a hurry won't. Driving adds up fast: valet is the only option, at $95 a night, and the hotel doesn't say whether Manhattan's 18.375% parking tax is in that figure.

Does the New York Hilton Midtown charge a destination fee?
Yes, $40 a night. The hotel calls it a Daily Mandatory Destination Charge, and Hilton's booking screen includes it in the nightly price it displays, before taxes. The hotel's amenities page lists what it covers without giving the amount: premium internet on three devices, a $20 daily food and beverage credit in the hotel's own restaurant, bar and lounge, a $35 daily laundry credit, a Citi Bike day pass and PressReader access.
How much is parking at the New York Hilton Midtown?
$95 a night, and it's valet only, with no self-parking. The garage is covered and secured with in-and-out privileges, entered from 53rd or 54th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. SUVs pay more, but the hotel's own pages give two different SUV prices, so confirm when you book. The hotel doesn't say whether Manhattan's 18.375% parking tax is included.
Will I pay the congestion toll driving to the hotel?
Yes. The hotel is at Sixth Avenue and 53rd Street, inside Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone, which covers local streets and avenues at or south of 60th Street. A car with E-ZPass pays $9 at peak times (5 am to 9 pm weekdays, 9 am to 9 pm weekends) and $2.25 overnight, charged once a day.
How do I get a quieter room?
Ask for a high floor away from the elevators. Guests praise the upper-floor skyline rooms as the quieter ones. Lower rooms facing Sixth Avenue pick up sirens and traffic, and rooms near the elevator banks hear crowds in the hallway.
What time is check-in?
3 pm, and you must be 18 to check in. Check-out is noon. Staying past noon brings a graduated fee up to 4 pm and a full night's charge after that, and leaving earlier than booked costs one full night.
Can I bring a pet?
Yes. The hotel charges a $150 non-refundable pet fee and sets a 75 lb weight limit.
